Ocean Bound Plastic Up Cycling: Waste Management Infrastructure in Kota Kinabalu

As Urbanisation and population continues to grow, waste generation has increase causing overflow of landfill and exhaustion of waste management system. This crisis heavily impacts on ocean ecosystems, the integrity of food supplies, and people’s livelihoods for those living along the coastal area as rubbish makes way into the oceans. The situation is worsen as the effectiveness with current waste recovery centre is low, being only functional places, like factories, they are conceived as disconnected from the public, both from the social and visual points of view.

Utilising waste recovery and Up-cycling activity as a catalyst for Urban Regeneration, that will spark public awareness, participation, & enthusiasm of its local community towards the sustainable future of the city, The intervention aims to introduce a research & recovery Up-cycling centre, where the miss-managed waste of the community is recovered and transformed into valuable items, spreading knowledge and producing new innovations from recycling. The thesis follow the principle of “Architecture as a Device” by going against the notion of these facilities as a local service and can be combine with social activities intended for community use.
