Neuro-divergent Friendly Architecture: redefining the built environment on neuro-diverse communities physically and psychologically, and integrating them into society to increase awareness and understanding

The neurodivergent population in Malaysia is rapidly growing. Neurodivergent individuals, including both audits and children, often struggle to process their environment. Despite the fact that 1 in 8 people are neurodivergent, only half of them are aware of it. People with neurodivergent brains can appear vastly different from others, and their world may seem shrouded in mystery. However, with closer examination, we may discover that they are actually very similar to us. What they need most is understanding and compassion.

Misconceptions about neurodivergent individuals often lead people to believe that they are deliberately difficult or uncooperative. In reality their behavior is not under their control and stems from underlying neurological differences. They require heightened awareness and understanding from society. Everyone has the potential for unlimited growth and development, as long as they are provided with an environment that supports their abilities.

Sensitivity to sensory overload is a common challenge for neurodivergent individuals. Unfortunately, designers and architects often neglect these specific needs, failing to follow neurodivergent design principles that require specialized research methods. Neuroaiversity does not fade with age. making it vital for neurodivergent individuals to be able to communicate and be accepted by society.
