Elevated space that accommodates the visually impaired communities

Malaysia has blindness and visual impairment rates that are comparable with other countries in the South East Asia region. Approximately 1.2% of the population are experiencing blindness. Visually impaired individuals encounter various challenges in their daily lives. Accessibility remains a significant barrier, particularly in public spaces, transportation, and infrastructure. Besides that, visually impaired individuals encounter various challenges when navigating the built environment. Employment opportunities and social inclusion for visually impaired individuals also pose significant challenges due to prevailing stigmas, lack of awareness, and inadequate support systems.

The approach is to use a multi-sensory design approach. This approach involves incorporating various sensory elements, such as touch, sound, and smell, into the design of buildings and spaces. The intention is to show that sensory architecture integration can have a significant impact on the lives of visually impaired individuals. It can improve their ability to navigate through buildings and spaces, reduce feelings of isolation and anxiety, and increase their overall sense of independence.
