Transforming Farming in the City from Unused Spaces in Affordable Housing Communities

In Malaysia, rising food prices due to Covid-19 supply chain disruptions have highlighted food security concerns, especially for vulnerable populations. Urban farming approaches have gained popularity, but many are commercially focused and may not directly benefit affected communities. However, urban farming has shown higher yields compared to conventional methods.

PPR Kampung Muhibbah, a low-cost housing complex, aims to establish a self-sufficient food supply system. Potential farming spaces within the complex, such as corridors, green areas, and open spaces, are being identified. To ensure success, a central hub will be established, serving as a distribution point and community space. The hub will manage coordination, resources, technical support, quality control, and community engagement.

The Community Farming Hub integrates nutrient solution-based hydroponics and aquaponics systems to cater to various vegetable needs sustainably. Community activities like markets, workshops, and a renovated food court will foster a holistic and vibrant environment, promoting self-sufficiency and community well-being.

Overall, the master plan in PPR Kampung Muhibbah addresses food insecurity, promotes sustainable farming practices, and enhances community engagement. The project aims to be a model for other low-cost housing communities in Malaysia.
