Aqua Architecture: Business adaptation strategy to mitigate flooding and future potential rising sea level at Kuala Terengganu

Kuala Terengganu will be impacted by potential rising sea levels by 2050. Many urban coastal development areas such as Pasar Payang, Kampung Cina, and Pulau Warisan will be wiped out in the future. Therefore, the Aqua Community Market is proposed as the architectural adaptation strategy to mitigate future potential rising sea levels and flooding to remain economically viable for Kuala Terengganu. Aqua Community Market adopts the floating structure system to build on the water, along the waterfront of Jalan Pesisir Payang, in front of the Pasar Payang building. Aqua Community Market often promotes a sense of community spirit, supports local businesses, and promotes the tourism industry in Kuala Terengganu, providing opportunity for local traders to trade their goods and product with tourists and interact with each other. By adopting aqua architecture which can embrace the water by incorporating it into the city, creating resilient buildings and infrastructure that can handle extreme flooding, heavy rains, and higher water level, Aqua Community Market intends to help the local business community, especially the local traders continue to live with water without abandoning their homeland, with their on-going businesses that would continue to sustain their livelihood and socio-economic in the future.
